Open your home, open your heart

Discover how fostering makes a profound difference for animals in need at Wallowa County Humane Society. Your kindness can provide a safe haven and a second chance.

The vital role of fostering

At the Wallowa County Humane Society, we are unique because we do not operate a physical shelter. This means we rely entirely on the incredible dedication of our volunteer fosters to care for animals until they find their forever homes. Fostering provides animals with food, water, a safe place to live, and any necessary medications. Without our compassionate fosters, the vital work we do for animals in our community simply wouldn't be possible.

Who makes a great foster parent?

The best foster parents are compassionate individuals with a genuine understanding of animal care. You don't necessarily need a large home or specialized skills, but a safe place for animals to reside is essential. Fosters also need their own transportation to take animals to the veterinarian or adoption events. Responsibilities may include house-training dogs, administering medication, and keeping detailed records for each animal while coordinating closely with our records keeper.

Your responsibilities as a foster

The primary responsibility of a foster parent is ensuring the overall well-being of the animals in their care. This includes providing a loving and stable environment, meeting their daily needs for food and water, and ensuring they receive any necessary medical attention. Your dedication directly impacts an animal's ability to heal, thrive, and ultimately find their permanent home.

Support for our foster families

The Wallowa County Humane Society is committed to supporting our foster parents every step of the way. We provide food and supplies, cover all veterinary costs, and coordinate efforts to get the animals adopted. Importantly, no adoption takes place without the full consent of the foster parent, ensuring you have a say in where your foster animal ultimately goes. We are here to help you succeed in this rewarding journey.
