How we fulfill our mission
Wallowa County Humane Society actively works to help animals in need and supports our community through various programs and initiatives.
Foster program
Our dedicated foster program provides temporary homes for pets, giving them a safe and loving environment until they find their forever families. This allows us to care for more animals and prepare them for adoption.
Pet adoptions
Pet adoptions are the primary way that we have of helping animals find new homes. Each adoption takes place through a process in which we facilitate the best fit for the animal and potential adopter. Every animal that gets adopted opens up a new space with one of our fosters to provide a temporary home and prepare the animal for it's new forever home.
Spay and neuter assistance
We offer spay and neuter vouchers that provide a significant discount on these procedures through our local veterinarians. This helps control pet overpopulation and promotes animal health.
Feral cat trapping program
Wallowa County Humane Society has an active trap-neuter-return program for feral cats. We trap in known locations for cat colonies, in places where dumping is know to occur, and when property owners need assistance with trapping feral cats.
Feral cat traps for community use
We offer feral cat traps to community members free of charge. Traps are borrowed from us in ready-to-use condition. Upon return, we expect the traps to be in fully-operational condition and clean so that we can easily provide them to the next person who needs them.
Community re-homing assistance
We work collaboratively with the community to assist animals that need to be re-homed. We offer advice and provide free listings on our website for private adoptions. Our goal is to help find suitable new homes for pets whose owners can no longer care for them.
Education and outreach
We provide educational opportunities for people to learn about various aspects of animal care, including fostering, pet sitting, and responsible pet ownership.
Programs and events for children and seniors
We offer programs and events that specifically benefit children and senior citizens who live in care homes. Our Kids' Movie Night is popular with children and gives parents a night off. Pet Therapy is a program in which animals are brought into senior care facilities to brighten the day of people who reside there.
Partner with local veterinarians
We are very proud to partner with our local veterinarians. Through these partnerships, we are able to offer our spay and neuter vouchers to the local community. Animals in our care get medical treatment through our local veterinarians, as do spay and neuter procedures for our trap-neuter-return program. Records for animals that get adopted are transferred to the new pet parent's account for continuity in health and vaccination history.
Coordinate with law enforcement
We work with law enforcement in cases of animal abandonment, abuse, and neglect. These efforts include coordination for placing animals until they can be adopted and communication for situations in which animals need to be relocated. Wallowa County Humane Society makes use of the County-owned pound and helps with maintenance and cleaning of the facility. We care for animals when they are temporarily housed at the pound.
